Homeward Bound Animal Shelter
Come find your perfect companion

In March of 2018 the Manistee community lost a dedicated animal supporter and veterinarian Dr. Jeffery Westhemier.  As a child growing up on a farm, he knew from age 5 he would be a veterinarian. He pursued his dream at Michigan State University, earning his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 1972.  Since 1974, Jeff practiced veterinary medicine in Manistee County, forming his business Manistee Veterinary Hospital. Jeff was an avid stamp and glass collector. He was an active supporter of 4-H for over 40 years. He served on the Brown Township Board of Trustees and participated in Men Who Care. He founded the nonprofit, Hearts for Critters which provides pet food to food pantries and provided care to many animals that came through Homeward Bound Animal Shelter.  He will be greatly missed especially by the four-legged animals he served.

Reasons to adopt a pet

  • You will save a life.
  • If you adopt an adult pet, there's a possibility you can avoid some of the hassles related to house-training and teething, which are associated with puppies and kittens. Of course, if you prefer a puppy or kitten, shelters have plenty of those available as well.
  • You'll save money because adoption costs less than buying an animal from a pet shop or breeder.
  • Perfectly "perfect" animals of all breeds, shapes, ages and sizes are available at shelters. Just because an animal ends up there doesn't mean there is anything wrong with them. They are just in need of a second chance.
  • You just might meet your best friend.

                       Animal Intake
All animal intakes are done by appointment.  If you need to bring in an animal to the shelter, you must call the shelter ahead of time.  Depending on space availability, you may be placed on our waiting list. Priority is given to residents in Manistee County.
